Episode 5: A Test of Words

Korrin Vale keeps his hands at his sides, steadying his breath as the cold edge of the dagger presses against his ribs. A fight here, in the dark alleys of Blackport, would be reckless. His only weapon now is his tongue.
I didn’t come to die in an alley
, he says, voice even. And I doubt you want to clean up a body tonight.
A pause. Then, a quiet chuckle. The dagger lingers a moment longer before easing away.
You’re not as foolish as you look
, the figure murmurs.
Korrin turns slowly, getting his first proper look at the stranger. The dim torchlight barely reveals their features, but their posture is relaxed, assessing. A woman—lean, roguish, with a scar tracing down one cheek. The gleam of hidden weapons reflects in the low light.
You followed me
, she continues, amusement in her voice. I wonder… are you just curious, or do you actually have something to offer?
Korrin studies her carefully. He could lie. He could tell the truth. Either way, he gets the feeling that this woman is testing him.
And he needs to choose his next words carefully.
